Jefferson

Many people do.

Even many, if not most, good Christians have at some point. It's why Christianity is so hard for Atheists to use the Scientific Method against. Christianity already has.

And they remained, or became Christians doing so.

If I remember correctly, there's a version of the Bible where President Jefferson attempted to remove all of Jesus Christ's referring to the divine... whilst leaving the Wisdom that Thomas Jefferson acknowledged Jesus Christ gave.

Reportedly, he failed.

Either there was to much God, remaining in the Wisdom for Jefferson's Deist taste.

Or, the Wisdom became increasingly sparse and/or weak, without God's Presence.
